| What I Know for Sure
Sometimes when I’m unclear about things in my life, or when things get a little muddled in my mind, I go back to what I know for sure. Then I rediscover that I once knew my truth in my heart, but I’ve forgotten again. Revisiting the foundation to my beingness from time to time is a healthly exercise for my spirit.
We all need reminders of what’s important in life. More, we all need reminders about what’s important to us personally. Day-to-day living can put us out of balance, especially when we want to do it all and have it all. It’s renewing to wade through all the endless options and possibilities, and then get clear about what takes priority in our lives, and by which values and philosophies we live.
Finding our clarity is the journey of life. As we move forward, hopefully we become more and more definitive about how we want to shape our lives. That journey can take many forms. For some it’s subtle learning, for others it’s a conscious practice of choosing how to live.
In my journey of discovering more of my authentic self, I watched myself, bit by bit, pull back the layers of the metaphorical onion that held so many behaviours and beliefs that no longer served me. It was not a linear process by any stretch of the imagination. As I uncovered one layer I would find another belief just waiting to sabotage the new, healthier belief. It can be a slow and cumbersome undertaking. I have seen myself remember what it is to be my most trusting self. I’ve also believed many times that I had let go of that which I no longer wanted, only to realize that at some unconscious level, I was still desperately hanging onto my old self. Even if a new way held promise for greater life satisfaction, I was unknowingly protecting myself from the unfamiliar.
Yet this transformation is well worth it, because when we peel back enough layers of the onion, we find a more wholesome core. There truly is more life satisfaction and greater joy!
My journey has been steep and it has taught me well. I now guide others through the same process, using life coaching and transpersonal psychotherapy as the foundation for my practice. When I partner with my clients, I often find myself remembering what it was like for me, and there is no doubt I am a better guide for it. While my education has provided me with the tools and skills I need to be of greatest benefit to my clients, it’s my personal experience that gives me utmost confidence in the service I offer.
I am firm in my conviction that having a guide to help us understand our own complexity, transform our pains, and sustain our new beliefs and behaviours is the easier path. Often we are so deep into our own issues, that we find it difficult to step back and find a new viewpoint. Without a new perspective, we believe we are limited in choice, and it is this constraint that often leaves us believing we must be a victim to our circumstances. Not only do we not see all the options, but we don’t even hear ourselves when we speak the very words that fuel our fears. When I guide others, I mirror back to them what it is they have said to me. Often my clients are surprised to realize that they have been creating their own challenging reality. Having an objective guide work with you can take you to places you didn’t know existed.
Discovering an entirely new world of choices is like a sprinkling of ocean spray on a hot, sunny day. With perseverance you can create a whole new world of ‘What I Know for Sure’. I share a few of my own 'knowings' below. They may inspire you or help you to remember.
I am fully responsible for myself. Nobody else creates our lives for us.
I have choice. There are endless possibilities. We can pick one and give it all our energy.
It’s all about balance. No matter what we do in our lives, it always comes back to this. Balance is not static, but we can consciously move toward it.
When I let go of some ideal for which I struggle, life flows. Vision is important as long as we can be flexible about how our desires come to be fulfilled!
I can live out of love or fear. Love makes life easier and more colourful.
I need to be clear about what I want in my life, and then it’s mine. Set a clear intention and watch it manifest!
When I love myself, the rest takes care of itself.
